Russian Foreign Minister: Gulf states will not join sanctions against us

After a closed-door meeting with foreign ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) in Riyadh, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the West was seeking to form a unilateral world led by the United States.

At a press conference on Wednesday, he also accused Western countries of pushing Ukraine to threaten his country's security.

He said the GCC countries understand the nature of the conflict between his country and the West, adding that the Gulf states have confirmed that they will not join the sanctions against Moscow.

He also stressed that Western countries were violating the UN Charter by acting against his country, calling for the withdrawal of heavy weapons from Ukraine.

He also said that international conventions and the Minsk Treaty clearly defined the status of the territories of eastern Ukraine, but Kiev had not implemented those charters, he said.

As for supplying Ukrainian forces with sophisticated rocket launchers from the United States, he said the move increases the risk of a "third country" being brought into the conflict.

The Russian minister arrived in Riyadh yesterday, where he met with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, who stressed the kingdom's readiness to make the necessary efforts to contribute to a political solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which is in its fourth month.
