Sanaa.. Houthis seize and confiscate citizens' land

According to a human rights group, the Houthi militia is in grave violation of the property of citizens living in the altar, Sinina and Suwan in the militia-controlled Yemeni capital Sanaa, under the pretext of public interest and military necessity.

In a statement, Sam Organization for Rights and Freedoms said that the expropriation of land and private property, and the establishment of restrictive conditions that impede citizens' right to build and amend, under the pretext of the common good, as well as the establishment of military sites, constitute a serious violation of the fundamental rights guaranteed by both international and Yemeni law.

The Houthi militia called for an immediate halt to the escalation by using force and the judiciary at other times against civilians to extract land and private property from them.

The rights group said competition for land ownership in areas controlled by the Houthi militia has expanded since it took control of the capital Sanaa and a conflict of interest emerged among its leaders.

It also revealed that the wing led by Mohammed al-Huthi took over the task of confiscating and repossessing large tracts of land and extracting it from others on the grounds that it was waqf land, or that it was state-owned, which had a significant impact on civilians and threatened thousands with forced displacement.

Sam said the Houthi militia continues to significantly intensify its control over the real estate market and facilitate the tasks of its leaders in seizing state-owned land, endowments and residents in areas under its control.

She confirmed receiving dozens of complaints about the expropriation of property and the denial of dozens of buildings, as well as the refusal of Houthi gunmen from the so-called "supervisory offices" in Sana'a to pay rent for apartments they had rented from their owners, or even out of them, for a long time.

Over the past few years, the Houthi militia has expanded dredging, looting and purchasing the remaining state land and real estate and citizens in Sanaa, the capital, and other cities under its control, the statement said.

Sam Rights and Freedoms said its team met with a number of victims and victims whose land had been confiscated and deprived of construction or attication, and received certificates proving that entire land had been taken away in order to establish military sites and points, which the organization considered "a flagrant and unacceptable violation and a clear attack by the Houthi militia on the rights guaranteed and protected."
